Alex Katz is the painter and printmaker, known for his use of flat color and economy of line. In response to 1950s Abstract Expressionism, Katz developed his distinct style to strike a balance between formalism and representation. The results are boldly simplified images of subject matter, which often include the landscapes of Maine, his wife, and family and friends.
