Sir Howard Hodgkin is a Turner Prize-winning painter and printmaker who was knighted for his service to the arts. Hodgkin's paintings and prints often refer to memories and private experiences, but deliberately avoid the illustrational. They also appear spontaneous, with their sweeping complex textures, lush colors, and dynamic interchange of light and dark. In reality, they are usually the result of an extensive process of layering and over-painting.
