Julian Schnabel first became known for his paintings on velvet and for canvases, whose painting surface was made of shattered crockery and other found materials. He then expanded into sculpture and gained arguably more fame for his direction of films, including Basquiat, starring David Bowie and Gary Oldman, and Scaphandre et le papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), which won the Golden Globes Awards for best director and best foreign-language film.
