Collection: Pat Steir

b. 1940, Newark, NJ

Painter, printmaker, and installation artist Pat Steir rose to fame in the 1970’s, creating monochromatic canvases of roses and other images that were crossed out. The paintings were intended to destroy the concept of images as symbols while at the same time creating endless imagery through the act itself by making the image a symbol for a symbol. Since
that time her work has been informed by her interest in art history and influenced by 19th century Romanticism, Abstract Expressionism, Japanese woodcuts, and Chinese landscape paintings of the Song and Tang dynasties. She is best known for her dripped and splashed “waterfall” paintings which she began making in the 1980s.
